Goals of the Tobacco Biofuels Project

To develop a plant that can produce Biofuel efficiently and within a reasonable economic framework. This is the dream of Dr. Hilary Koprowski of the Biotechnology Foundation Laboratories, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA.  The collaboration between Thomas Jefferson University and Rutgers University has led to the development of tobacco plant lines that produce 20 times more triglyceride in the green tissue (leaves) than unmodiified tobacco (See Below). This will allow farmers to produce Biofuel using a home grown crop that they know how to grow and that will combat global warming by taking CO2 out of the atmosphere.  For more information, contact Dr. Nikolai Borysyuk at Jefferson University (Mykola.Borysyuk@jefferson.edu) or Dr. Joe Dixon (See Contact Us).
